A pretty agricultural center, Camastra stands out for its production of cereals, almonds, and grapes. Sheep farms lead the breeding activity. Typical are the numerous wrought iron hand made objects.
The name Camastra derives from the Byzantine Greek term Kremastra, that means "chain" and refers to the iron chain used to support the paiolo (big copper pot) over the chimney fire.

The suburb was founded by Lord Giacomo Lucchesi, with the Arab name Ramùlia, in other word "sandy". Afterwards, it became seat and feud of the Lanza Princes from Trabia, who owned it until 1812, when the feudal regime was abolished.
Relevant throughout the entire territory are the various archeological areas, especially Castellazzo di Camastra where numerous pre-historical constructions have been discovered.
It is important to remember that in Camastra, an association for the safeguard of workers' rights called the "Federazione siciliana dei lavoratori della terra" (Sicilian workers' federation), was founded in 1912.
