A small agricultural town, Castrofilippo boasts the biologic cultivation of grapes, wheat, onions, garlic, and fruit, products that are exhibited during the annual Agriculture Fair in the month of August. Among the dairy products, the local handicrafted pecorino cheese is famous.
The name Castrofilippo means Castello di re Filippo (castle of King Philip), and the town was so called by the Count of Briatico, to honor King Filippo II of Spain. The feudal suburb was founded in 1576, with "licentia aedificandi", by Stefano Monreale, Duke of Metinna and vice king of Sicily. In 1625, Lord Vincenzo Cicala was nominated the town's chief duke. The town became independent as the feudal rights were abolished.
Among the monuments, remarkable is the Chiesa Madre erected during the XVIII century, dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario (of the Rosary).
