The archaelogical site of Eraclea Minoa

The ruins of the Greek town of Eraclea Minoa are at the beginning of Capo Bianco.

Before reaching the excavations, you can enjoy the wonderful white rocks called "marna", a mixture of clay and limestone modelled by erosions and winds.

The legend tells that Minos, king of Crete, run after Daedalus all over Sicily to punish him for helping Ariadne and Theseus to find the way out from the labyrinth.

Minos was killed in this area by the Sican king Cocalo, who was housing Daedalus. Maybe the name Minoa comes right from the Cretan king.

The Greek theatre

The excavations started in 1950 and have brought to light ruins of raw bricks houses, some of them with signs of mosaics.

Also a wonderful theatre has been excavated, but as the rock is very friable it is not very well preserved.

From the ruins of the theatre the pointed shape of the cavea can be located, which ends an orchestra shaped like a horseshoe.

Also a Greek necropolis dated back to the early Bronze age has been found, along with city walls and towers and gates in ruin.

The archaelogical site of Eraclea Minoa

At the entrance of the archaelogical area there is a small Antiquarium housing the findings of the town, and here you can admire pottery, figurines and tomb equipment found beneath the archaic necropolis.
