Grotte (Zip Code 92020) is 20 Km. distant from Agrigento, the province it belongs to, 49 Km. from Caltanissetta, 187 Km. from Catania, 90 Km. from Enna, 283 Km. from Messina, 139 Km. from Palermo, 151 Km. from Ragusa, 232 Km. from Siracusa, 193 Km. from Trapani.

The mother church

The municipality counts 7.206 inhabitants, its surface measures 2.386 hectares, and its population density is of 302 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on an internal hilly area, 546 meters above the sea-level.

The Town Hall is located in piazza Umberto I, tel. ++39 922 943086 fax ++39 922 945864.

A charming agricultural town, Grotte stands out for the production of olives, almonds, grapes, and cereals. Conspicuous are the sheep farms, exhibited during the annual Cattle Fair held in the month of September.

The name Grotte derives from the Byzantine Greek term Krupte, that means "grotta" (cave), and it indicates the dense presence of caves throughout the territory.

La Chiesa del Purgatorio

Approximately during the XIV century, the feud was founded by the Ventimiglia family.

Between the XV and XVI century, it belonged to several feudal families, such as Montaperto and Girgenti.

In 1648, Lord Desiderio di S. Filippo became the town's duke, and was so until the coming of the princes of Carini, the La Grua Talamanca. In 1812 the town acquired its independence.

Among the monuments to be remembered, the Chiesa Madre that goes back to 1700, the Chiesa del Carmine reconstructed in 1968, and the Chiesa del Purgatorio, XIX century.

Monolito: complesso rupestre

The most noteworthy urban constructions are 1748's Palazzo La Grua, and the Palazzo del Municipio (Building of the Town Hall), located in the ex convent of the Padri Carmelitani.

It is important to mention the famous surgeon Luigi Carmona (1885-1984), and his remarkable research on blood transfusions and the regeneration of damaged nerves. He was the founder of the Scuola Siciliana di Chirurgia (Sicilian School of Surgery).
