A pleasant agricultural town, Montallegro boasts a conspicuous production of almonds, grapes, and olives. All through the territory, there are several manufactures of fixtures and furniture.

The original name of the first inhabited center was Angiò, because the town was situated on a mountain (the current Monte Suso) between Cattolica and Siculiana.

Remains of the ancient suburb

Approximately during 1600, because of the severe lack of water, the suburb was abandoned and the center was relocated to the valley below.

It first belonged to Lord Nicolò Montaperto, who gave the town its current name Montallegro, and was then acquired by the Prince of Castiglione.

In 1663, the feud became dominion of the Princes of Petrulla, who had achieved the "licentia populandi" from King Filippo III.

Furthermore, the town was acquired by the noble Gioieni family, who were conferred the title of dukes, and who ruled until the feudal rights were abolished.

Among the town's monuments, of remarkable architectural interest is the church Chiesa Madre dedicated to S. Maria delle Catene, erected during the XVII century, and the remains of the ancient suburb, accessible by means of a long stairway excavated in the rocks.
