The town of Acquaviva Platani

Tourism in Acquaviva Platani

The Clock Tower

Acquaviva Platani is a small town situated over a slope, from where you can enjoy beautiful and unique views. The town was founded in 1635 by Francesco Spadafora and it was called Acquaviva for its abundant waters crossing the countryside.

Amongst its many beautiful monuments, such as churches, squares and buildings, Acquaviva Platani has a peculiar Clock Tower.

The Tower was designed by Mr Alessandro Lazzarini, an engineer that twice a week used to come from Lercara and work for free. He was committed by his friend and the mayor of Acquaviva, Pietro Giudici, elected in 1889.

To build it, the population had to apply for a loan to the Cassa di Soccorso of Palermo, but the beauty of the masterpiece repaid the efforts made by the whole community.

The Clock Tower was inaugurated in 1894, and all the people who rushed to see it, being enthusiastic, declared Mr Lazzarini a town's honorary citizen.

The clock tells the time every 15 minutes and it beats with 100 strokes: 04.30 is for farmers, 08.30 is for students, 12.00 and 24.00 for everybody.
