The Cathedral

Caltanissetta downtown is marked by Piazza Garibaldi and on the South-east side there is the cathedral.

The church is dedicated to St. Maria la Nova and St. Michael and was built between 1570 and 1622.

The Latin cross interior is divided in three naves sustained by columns and surmounted by a dome.

The central nave is decorated with stuccoes and valuable frescoes by Guglielmo Borremans, from Anversa (1670-1744). These frescoes are probably his best artistic creation.

The Cathedral

The second chapel on the right is enriched by a splendid 1760 wooden statue, the Holy Virgin.

In the chapel next to the mayor chapel there are two notable statues: St. Michael the Archangel, a wooden statue by Stefano Li Volsi from Enna, and the Archangels Gabriel and Rafael, marble statues by Vincenzo Vitaliano, from Palermo.

In the high altar one can admire the Holy Virgin and Saints, a large altar piece by Borremans.

Other three valuable items complete the beautiful church: a precious carved and decorated organ pipe, a painting representing the Madonna del Carmelo by Filippo Paladino (1544-1614) with light colours and a delicate touch, and a Crucifix attributed to fra' Umile da Petralia.
