It is prevalently an agricultural center; the production of wheat, almonds, grapes, olives, and artichokes is substantial. Cattle breeding is also very important, and we mustn't forget the handicrafts, especially as per wood work.

Many sources have the name Mazzarino derive from the term Mazzara, as a transformation of the ancient toponymy name "Makterium". The center rose during the Middle Ages, in the surroundings of an Arab castle. In 1143, Manfredi became Mazzarino's first lord. In 1304, it was bestowed to the dynasty of the Branciforte family.

The Church of S. Mazzaro

With the advent of Nicolò Melchiorre, count of Mazzarino, in 1507, the town experienced a remarkable economical growth. As of the XVII century, until the abolition of the feudal rights, the members of the Carafa family were the Lords of Mazzarino.

To this day, there are still numerous remains of the ancient Arab Castle.

The town's main street is definitely very interesting, thanks to the presence of the Chiesa Madre, built during the XVIII century, and the Palazzetti Nobiliari (small noble palaces), that go back to the XVII and XIX centuries.

The Churches of S. Maria del Gesù and of the Carmine are noteworthy, rich of plasters and frescoes. Oustanding, as well, is the Palazzo dei Branciforte, that has been restructured more than once.
