Castle Manfredonico Chiaramontano

The town stands out for the conspicuous production of wheat, oil, wine, figs, and Indian figs. Cattle breeding and sheep farms are relevant, and they originate the production of various dairy products, such as ricotta cheese.

The handicraft activity boasts the production of various wrought iron, wooden, and ceramic objects. Hand embroidered laces, baskets, and wicker baskets made of reeds are typical.

The name Mussomeli derives from the Arab term Manzil, that means "dwelling, farmhouse", and from Mel, that means "good".

It was possessed by the Normans, by the Swabians and Angevins; the Angevins were responsible for a peculiar urban and architectural growth, that granted the town the definition of "Europe's crèche".

The current center was founded with the name Manfreda, by Prince Manfredi III Chiaramonte during the XIV century. In the XV century, the suburb acquired its current name. The town was under the dominion of the Lanza dynasty from 1549 to 1812, and subsequently became independent.

The most interesting monuments are the Chiaramonte Castle, built in 1300, the Chiesa Madrice di S. Ludovico of the XV century, preserving several statues by Bagnasco (XIX century) and the Sanctuary of Maria SS. dei Miracoli, beholding a marvelous statue of the Madonna dei Miracoli.

Noteworthy is also the Chiesa di S. Margherita, XIV century, for the presence of numerous stuccoes by Serpotta (1656-1732).
