The town of San Cataldo

Tourism in San Cataldo

The archeological site of Vassallaggi

San Cataldo is a large agricultural centre - famous are its almond and cereal cultivations - founded in 1607 by Nicolò Galletti.

Four kilometres from the town, in contrada Vassallaggi, there are the ruins of a town. Situated on a hill next to the road taking from Agrigento to Enna, it was established in protohistory age, in the 6th century BC, inhabited by local people.

In 570 BC it was hellenized: the Greeks arrived on the Vassallaggi hill and built a village on the ruins of a site dated back to the Iron Age.

The town developed when in the 4th century BC its walls were remade  transforming the town-planning: streets forming right angles and dwellings according to the Greek model.

Of great archeological importance and beauty is the necropolis whose hundreds of tombs have been explored.

Some are really big with alabaster walls and contained rich equipments, arms and vases. Life in Vassallaggi went on up to the Roman age.

All findings are kept in the Archeological Museum of Gela.
