Sommatino (Zip Code. 93019) is 55 Km. distant from Agrigento, 28 Km. from Caltanissetta, which is the province it belongs to, 139 Km. from Catania, 69 Km. from Enna, 235 Km. from Messina, 170 Km. from Palermo, 120 Km. from Ragusa, 184 Km. from Siracusa, 228 Km. from Trapani.

The municipality counts 8.033 inhabitants, its surface measures 3.468 hectares, and its population density counts 232 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises over an internal hilly area, 359 meters above the sea-level.

A charming agricultural suburb, Sommatino is outstanding for its production of wheat, olives, fruit, and grapes.
Cattle breeding is also conspicuous because of the vast pasture areas. The handicrafted wooden objects are unique.
The name Sommatino derives from the Latin term Summus, that means higher, placed up high.

The feud was founded in the XIV° century. It belonged to the noble Tagliavia family, and in 1476 it was bestowed to Lord Gerlando Del Porto, who initiated the suburb's peopling with "licentia populandi".
Subsequently, and until the abolition of feudality, the town was under the dominion of the Princes Lanza of Trabia.
The most outstanding monuments are the XVIII° century Chiesa Madre, and the Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall building) built during the XIX° century.
A famous citizen from Sommatino was Filippo Terranova (1820-1878), who explored and studied the course of the Nile river, during the XIX° century.
