The Long Mine of Trabia Sommatino is mentioned for the first time in the census chronicles in 1583 but maybe it was preexisting. The town passed from the Tagliavias to the Del Portos and then to the princes of Trabia, the Lanzas, the homonymous mine owners. The history of Sommatino is strictly linked to the mining activity and one can trace it from the abandoned facilities. In the countryside of the small town there is the Long Mine of Trabia, which was once a compound of facilities and equipment for sulphur exploitation, one of the most important of Central-southern Sicily.

Centuries ago, carriages went up and down the mine full of precious yellow mineral but in 1787 it went on fire which lasted two years. It stopped only when the 700 tons of sulphur burnt. |
