The archeological area of Occhiolà

The new town was called Grammichele to invoke the protection of S. Michele, also called the "Grande" (Great), and it belonged to lord Carlo Maria Branciforte, prince of Butera and Roccella.

The new suburb was designed by architect Michele da Ferla (XVIII century), and it is based on a concentric urban structure surrounded by an hexagonal perimeter, with a big square at its center.

The most relevant monuments are the Chiesa Madre dedicated to S. Michele, patron saint of the town erected between 1724 and 1757, and the Town Hall's Palazzo Municipale, artwork of architect Carlo Sada (1809-1873), built towards the end of 1800.
