The town's ancient name derives from the Sicilian term Prachi, that means "zones, countrysides" because it was an agricultural farmhouse surrounded by vast agricultural areas. Originally, the suburb belonged to the jurisdiction of the Princedom of the princes of Valguarnera.
In 1664, it was acquired by the Royal Curia. In 1669, the feud was bestowed to lord Girolamo Gravina, who rebaptized it with the name Gravina. Only in 1862 the appositive "di Catania" was added, to differentiate it from the town of Gravina di Puglia, in the province of Bari.
Architecturally, the most interesting monument is the Chiesa Madre erected in the XVIII century, typically baroque, enriched by a majestic spired bell-tower preserving marvelous paintings dated XVII century.
All throughout the territory, there are numerous factories for the working and processing of agricultural and zootechnical products, oenology firms, and textile industries, which all represent the main sources of the town's income.
