The municipality counts 23.459 inhabitants, its surface measures 1.624 hectares, and its population density counts 1445 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises over a coastal hilly area, 420 meters above the sea-level.

The Town Hall is located in piazza Leonardo da Vinci, tel. ++39 095-7272112 fax. ++39 095-7273816.

A big agricultural center, Mascalucia boasts a rich production of table and wine grapes, citrus fruits, and cereals. The handicraft activity is characterized by embroideries, carpets (called "carpiti") woven with hand looms, and wrought iron and lava-stone objects.

The name Masca derives from the Byzantine-Greek term Màscale, that means "ascelle" (armpits) and it refers to the numerous gorges throughout the territory, that sometimes turn into deep streams.

Torre del Grifo

The appositive Lucia was added in honor of the town's homonymous patron saint. The first suburb was part of the Royal property, and in 1645 it was acquired by lord Michele Placido Branciforte, prince of Leonforte.

In 1669, the town was partially devastated by a volcanic eruption, and its remnants remained a possession of the Branciforte family, appointed with the title of dukes. In 1818, it was hit by a disastrous earthquake, and only subsequently did the slow renewal take place.

The most relevant monuments are the Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate erected in the XIV century, the Chiesa Madre and its portal made of local lava-stone, and the Chiesa di S. Vito preserving a splendid painting by Gaetano Rapisardi (XIX century).

Extremely interesting from an architectural point of view are the liberty style Palazzo Cirelli, and the so-called "Torre del Grifo" (the Tower of the Snout), of the Middle Age era.
