The Serracozzo Grottoes

In the neighbouring areas of the village it is possible to admire two of the most suggestive grottoes in the territory.

The first is the Grotto of Serracozzo I°, placed in the crack of a mount caused by an eruption and it shows a section like a lock which is about three metres high and large.

Looking at the top of the grotto it is possible to observe some openings; the downhill part shows a slipping tunnel.

This is characterized by a steep slope and it is 350 metres long and from 2 to 3 metres in breadth and the ground is made of lavic scoriae.

If it pays attention to it may be noticed that walls, in the initial part, are opaque while little by little they again show a glassy aspect.

As regards the second one, the Grotto of Serracozzo II°, it with its cavity represents the lower and the main effusive mouth of the eruption in 1971.

The crack caused by the eruption could go through for about 15 metres and walls were covered by a thin lavic plaster, polished and glassy.

In some parts such covering collapsed so it was possible to see the sandy ground in which was caused a red coloured crack in consideration of elevated temperature to which it had been subjected.
