The local handicraft activity is characterized by embroideries and by the tombolo (a particular type of lace worked with needles), exhibited during the annual Mostra artigianale del Tombolo (Tombolo handicraft exhibit) held in the month of September.

Opera del Tombolo

The town was named Mirabella by its founder Giuseppe Paternò, baron of Raddusa, in honor of his wife  lady Eleonora Mirabella.

The first suburb was erected within the pre-existent feud of Baldo, but was immediately abandoned because of a deadly pestilence.

In 1635, it was rebuilt and the appositive "Imbaccari" was added, because of the homonymous hill the town rose on. As of the XVII century, it belonged to the Trigonia family, and then to the princes Biscari until 1925, as it became an independent town.

The most outstanding monuments are the Palazzo Biscari erected in 1630, partially damaged by 1693's earthquake, and the typically baroque Chiesa Madre.

It is interesting to remember that lady Angelina Auteri, from Catania, established the so-called "Opera del Tombolo" in town, in 1910, an association teaching this peculiar hand made  embroidery art, that is today's main activity of local handicrafts.
