The name Pedara derives from the Latin term Lapidaria, that means "pietrosa" (stony) because the town rises over a land of lava-stone.

The first inhabited center rose during the Greek era, and it belonged to the jurisdiction of Catania's Senate until 1654.

Chiesa Maria della Stella

In 1693, it was destroyed by a terrible earthquake, and it was rebuilt thanks to don Diego Pappalardo, an architect and Knight from Malta.

The suburb was a dominion of the Di Giovanni family, and subsequently passed to the noble Alliata family from Villafranca, who possessed it until the abolition of the feudal rights.

Architecturally interesting is the Chiesa Madre, completed in 1705, preserving a typical quadrangular bell-tower with a conic dome, the Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie and the Chiesa Maria della Stella.

Some of Pedara's most famous citizens were the literary critic Alfio Tomaselli (1871-1954), and Giuseppina Faro (1847-1871), who in 1867 generously put herself at the service of cholera patients.
