San Michele di Ganzaria (Zip Code 95040) is 107 Km. distant from Agrigento, 71 Km. from Caltanissetta, 94 Km. from Catania, which is the province it belongs to, 50 Km. from Enna, 190 Km. from Messina, 213 Km. from Palermo, 89 Km. from Ragusa, 122 Km. from Siracusa, 280 Km. from Trapani.

The Church of San Giuseppe

The municipality counts 4.901 inhabitants, its surface measures 2.559 hectares, and its population density counts 192 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises over an internal hilly area, 490 meters above the sea-level.

The town boasts a rich production of cereals, grapes, olives. fruit, and citrus fruits, along with a consistent activity of cattle breeding, sheep farms and goat farms.

The town's name derives from its patron saint, with the addition of the Arab appositive  Kanzir,that means pig farms.

Presumably the first suburb dates back to the Arab era, and it experienced its maximum growth during the Angevin era.

It was a possession of the Gravina family as of 1447, and in 1534 one of the family components, Antonio, bestowed it to an exile colony of Greeks-Albanians headed by Nicola Bisurca and Antonio Figlia.

The most relevant monument is the Chiesa Madre built in the XII century, dedicated to  San Michele. Remembered by historians as the French Temple, it preserves a marble statue of the Saint, created according to the gaginesca school.

A particular of municipium

Very important is the Feudal castle of Gravina Princes, in ancient times it was builting with two flat and a basement. It was a way to reached the mountain.

Noteworthy are also the Church of San Giuseppe, the Church of Calvario and the Church of Rosario, builted in the XVII century. In the inside, it is preserve stucco works and consecrated representation.

During the month of November, San Michele di Ganzaria hosts the Oil and Wine Festival, followed by the Cuccia Festival (cuccia is a typical dish made of wheat grains) in the month of December.
