San Pietro Clarenza

The municipality counts 5.347 inhabitants, its surface measures 641 hectares, and its population density counts 834 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises above a coastal hilly area, 463 meters above the sea-level.

The Town Hall is located in via Rimembranze, tel. ++39 0955-20890 fax. ++39 0955-22291.

The local activity is prevalently agricultural, with a rich production if citrus fruits, grapes, and Indian figs. The local handicraft activity is characterized by hand made embroideries. There are numerous oenology and oil manufactures throughout the territory, as well.

The town's name derives from the inhabitants' cult for San Pietro, and from the name of the Clarenza family. The first inhabited center was property of lord Giovanni Andrea Massa, and afterwards of lord Antonio Reitano, who became the town's prince in 1648.

The town experienced two mayor natural calamities: 1669's eruption, and 1693's earthquake, that destroyed it completely.

It rose once again, with the sole name San Pietro, modified into San Pietro Clarenza when the town was acquired by nobleman Giuseppe Marino Clarenza, in 1779.

The most relevant monuments are the characteristic Palazzi Signorili built in the XVIII century, the Church of Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie and the urban constructions characterized by the late baroque architectural aspects.

The Comes family had origins in this town; among its notorious members, the naturalist Salvatore (1880-1954), who taught zoology at the University of Palermo, and literary Salvatore (1912-1973), who was the General Director of Italy's University Education and author of the critical essays regarding Ada Negri, Enrico Onufrio, and the "Garibaldian Literature".
