The Church of St. Philip

The church was built in the 12th century and since then, it has been restored several times.

It was almost completely restored in the 14th century, and in the last years of the 18th century it underwent new changes.

The church has three naves supported by columns.

The right nave has two remarkable sculptures of which the first represents a Madonna on the throne, between St. Basil and St. Benedict, the second one Our Lady of Monserrato.

Also several paintings by Giuseppe Velasquez (1750- 1827) are shown here.

The high altar has a carved wooden choir which represents some scenes of St. Philip's life, made by Nicola Bagnasco (1818-1822): there is also a wooden crucifix by Frà Umile da Petralia (1580-1639).

In the left nave is possible to admire two charming paintings, St. Agatha and the Pietà, made by Olivio Sozzi, and a triptych of St. Maria Latina, the Virgin in Majesty, and St. Luca Casali and St. Eusebius.

A sculpture of St. Philip by Giambattista Amendola (1848- 1887) is placed in the crypt, while there is a picture of Lying St. Philip on the altar, dated back to the 16th century.

You can also find the same picture, this time with reliefs by Gagini's school, in the niche behind the altar.
