A town with a typical Islamic urban setting, Assoro boasts a conspicuous cultivation of wheat, olives, grapes, and fruit, that are exhibited during the annual Agriculture Fair, held in the month of August.

The first inhabited center rose during the Greek-Roman era, as testified by Diodoro Siculo, Cicerone and Plinio il Vecchio.

It was conquered by the Arabs, and in 1061 by the Normans, who subsequently bestowed it to the bishop of Catania.

Palazzo Valguarnera

In 1299, it became a feudal suburb, property of nobleman Scaloro degli Uberti, who made his permanent residence of it.

Throughout the years, it belonged to several lords, such as Matteo Alogna, Damiano Polizzi, and the Count of Adernò Antonio di Montecastro.

In 1393, the feud was bestowed to the Valguarnera family, that beheld it until the abolition of the feudal rights.

The outstanding monuments are the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) erected in the XII century in honor of S. Leone, and the Church of the Carmelitani of 1400, preserving the tomb of nobleman Francesco Valguarnera.

Among the urban structures, the Palazzo Valguarnera and its singular illustrated corbels is noteworthy.

Assorino was the hometown of the famous physician Edoardo Pantano (1842-1932), who was conferred numerous and important public appointments, such as President of the Istituto Internazionale di Agricoltura (International Agricultural Institute)  and Senator of the Reign in 1921.
