Cattle breeding and sheep farmsare flourishing, and the deriving products can be tasted during the annualSagradel Castrato (Mutton Festival - a particular cattle meat specialty),held in the month of August.

The handicraft field is characterized by woodenobjects. Every year, in the month of August, the town organizes the so-called"Palio Nicosiano" (horse racing event), that is a storic event whereparticipants march wearing epoch costumes.

The name Nicosiaderives from the Greek term Nicosia, that means "the winner",and the town was given such appellative bu the Byzantines as a good omen.

In 1062, the first inhabited center was conquered by the Norman Count Ruggeroof Altavilla, who had a fortified castle built that became his permanentresidence.

Subsequently, the town was subject to numerous immigrationsof Lombards and  Piedmontese, that caused a substantial demographicincrease (to this day, the spoken local dialect presents typical Gallic-Italicforms).

A particular view of Nicosia

In the course of a century, the suburb was partially destroyedby two catastrophic events: a terrible plague epidemic in 1624, and a ruinouslandslide in 1757. Afterwards, the town became independent.

The outstanding monumentsare the Church of S. Salvatore erected in 1600, the Cathedral ofS. Nicola of the XIV century, preserving several sculptures by Gagini (1478-1536)and an engraved organ of 1600, and the 1200 Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, restructured by Giuseppe Serafino (XVIII century), that beholds a marvelousmarble polyptych, always by Gagini.

Just as relevant are the Churchof S. Vincenzo rich of polychrome marbles, and the Church of theCappuccini that preserves a luxurious wooden ciborium of 1700.

The most famous inhabitantfrom Nicosia was Gabriele Bonomo, of the Ordine dei Minimi (1694-1760)inventor of an original type of automatic watch.
