Republic square

The municipality counts 8.144 inhabitants, its surface measures 16.927 hectares, and its population density counts 48 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises over an internal hilly area, 535 meters above the sea-level.

The Town Hall is located in piazza Repubblica, tel. ++39 0935-71099 fax. ++39 0935-71208.

A charming mountain center, Regalbuto is outstanding for the rich production of wheat, fodder, citrus fruits, almonds, and grapes. Cattle breeding is flourishing, and its products are exhibited during the annual Cattle Fair held in the month of August.

The name Regalbuto derives from the Arab term Rahal Abbud, that means "Abbud's farmhouse", because it was founded by the Arabs.

Approximately in 1200, the center was destroyed by the inhabitants of the nearby town of Centirupe, who rebelled against the Swabian dominion by doing so. Only later did the town rise again, thanks to King Manfredi.

The town was never subject to fiscal taxes, and it was governed by a free magistracy elected by the king and the archbishops of Messina. The town was gravely damaged by the Second World War, and the current inhabited center was reconstructed only recently.

Architecturally, the most interesting monuments are the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) dedicated to S. Basilio, preserving a luxurious 10 meter altar dedicated to S. Vito, the Church of S. Maria della Croce with its splendid baroque staircase, and the XVIII century Church of S. Giovanni, that has a big bell loggia. Noteworthy are also the Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall building) of the XVIII century, and the remains of the XIII century castle.

Among Regalbuto's renown names, there was Salvatore Citelli (1875-1947) a very famous and noteworthy odontologist.
