Sperlinga (Zip Code 94010) is 140 Km. distant from Agrigento, 70 Km. from Caltanissetta, 108 Km. from Catania, 50 Km. from Enna, which is the province it belongs to, 182 Km. from Messina, 149 Km. from Palermo, 182 Km. from Ragusa, 166 Km. from Siracusa, 248 Km. from Trapani.

The municipality counts 1.011 inhabitants, its surface measures 5.876 hectares, and its population density counts 17 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises over an internal mountain area, 750 meters above the sea-level.

Situated over a hill with slopes crossed by the Nicosia river, Sperlinga boasts a conspicuous production of wheat, olives, citrus fruits, and fodder.

Local Cattle breeding and sheep farms are flourishing, and their deriving products can be tasted during the annual Cattle Fair held in the months of June, August, and September.

The name Sperlinga derives from the transformation of the Latin term Spelunca, that means "cave" because the the surrounding areas are full of troglodytical caves.

The first inhabited center was founded by the Normans and it was transformed into a fort by Federico II of Swabia.

During the Vespro War of 1282, the French made their residence of it for military purposes, and the following year it was conquered by the Aragoneses.

For approximately three centuries, the feud belonged to the Ventimiglia family. Subsequently, nobleman Giovanni Ventimiglia bestowed it to lord Giovanni Forti Natoli, appointed Prince. He contributed to the creation of the current inhabited center.

Afterwards, the town experienced the feud belonged to the Oneto family until 1862, and was then bestowed to Baron Nunzio Nicosia.

Among the architectural structures, the most outstanding are the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church) of the XVII century, with one single aisle, the small Church of S. Luca, and the remains of the Norma Castle entirely excavated in the rock.
