The Norman Castle The castle was built in the Medieval age and now is situated in the main square. You can reach the entrance climbing a steep flight of steps carved into the rock. There are still traces of the old draw-bridge. Once at the top, you enter the castle through a hall taking to a second door. On the arch dominating the door there is a well known Latin inscription referring to the role played by the castle during the War of Vespers: "Quod Siculis placuit sola Sperlinga negavit".

The tour of the castle continues in its interior, walking through various rooms, some entirely dug in the rock, others brick built but now with no roof: then you reach the western side where there are the ruins of the church of St. Luke. Through further rooms, most being stables or prison cells all dug in the rock, you reach the northern exit of the castle and arrive in the "garden of the Duke". Through another flight of steps you reach the top of the castle, which can be accessed by an ogival door. |
