The Church of St. Giacomo Maggiore The Church of St. Giacomo Maggiore was built in the town main square in 1763. The building was commissioned by Villarosa's founders, the dukes of Casato Notarbartolo. The church is at the bottom of the square: to enter you have to climb a wide flight of steps. Next to the church there is a bell-tower which was built before the church itself. Inside you find the original sacred furnishings and works of art. On the right side of the entrance door there is an old font, which now keeps holy water. Close to the font there are two beautiful paintings representing the "Madonna of the Carmine" and the "Souls in Purgatory". Of great artistic interest is the painting representing a Madonna with Child, by the well famous Flemish school. Amongst the other paintings, we mention the "Assumption of the Virgin" (1842) by Raimondo Butera from San Cataldo. The only part which was reconstructed in 1962 is the high altar. As it was dedicated to the Madonna taken up into Heaven, it was declared "privileged" by Pope Pio IX. |
