The Cathedral Church built, between 1565 and 1582, is consecrated to Sant'Agata. The inside, in late Renaissance style, is divided into three naves emphasized by round arcades supported by monolithic columns made of local stone. It keeps a marble statue of San Sebastiano attributed to Rinaldo Bonanno (1530-1600); a canvas representing the Immacolata e i Ss. Rita e Domenico ascribed to Antonio Catalano the Younger (1585-1666) and a canvas with Madonna col Bambino tra i Ss. Cosma e Damiano made by Antonio Catalano the Elder (1560-1630); moreover there are two beautiful holy water vessels of 1600. Photo © Domenico Triolo
Beyond the XVIIIth-century high-altar which shows marble inlaids, there is a contemporary wooden choir with inlaids and panels representing scenes from Sant'Agata's life made by Santi Siracusa (1712) and Giuseppe Cuntrusceri (XVIII century). The wooden ciborium of early decades of the XVII century, inlaid and gilded, is placed in the left chapel of the high-altar. |
