The municipality has 834 inhabitants and an area of 1.198 hectares for a density of population of 421 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on a hilly area and is 550 metres above sea-level.

The centre is mainly agricultural and it produces cereals, wine-grapes and vegetables. Cattle and sheep-breedings are present. Excellent is the production of dairying products which are typical of the place.

The little town has been called "Casalnuovo" until 1862.

The present name derives from Greek Basilikò that means royal and refers to the abbey present in its territory and now are visible only its ruins.

There are few information about Basicò 's history but it is known that it was founded in 1310 by Frederick II of Aragon round the abbey and has been under his dominion for a long period.

Important from the architectonic point of view are the fourteenth-century Monastery of S. Chiara, just called Badiazza, that is big abbey; the Cathedral Church of St. Francis built in 1607; the Monastero dei Padri Basiliani (Monastery of Basilian Fathers) dates back to the XVI century.
