Capizzi (Zip Code 98031) is 184 km. distant from Agrigento, 112 km. from Caltanissetta, 97 km. from Catania, 71 km. from Enna, 167 km. from Messina, which province it belongs to, 157 km. from Palermo, 194 km. from Ragusa, 155 km. from Siracusa, 256 km. from Trapani.

The municipality has 3.688 inhabitants and an area of 6.990 hectares for a density of population of 53 inhabitants per square kilometre.

It rises on a mountainous area and is 1146 metres above sea-level.

San Giacomo square

The Town Hall is placed in piazza Umberto I, tel. ++39 0935-930011 fax. ++39 0935-933395.

The main economic activities are agriculture and breeding.

The prevailing cultivations are chestnuts, almonds, corn and cherries. Cattle and sheep-breedings are present in the territory. Besides very good are dairying products typical of this place.

The name derives from Latin Capitium that means hawk.

The first attestation of the existence of the small town is due to Cicero and dates back to Roman period.

Antonino Mancuso Fuoco: a picture of the painter

During the centuries it has been conquered by Arabs, Normans and Swabians.

During the Swabian domination it has been governed at first by the Antiochus and then by Blasco of Alagona.

Later it came into possession of others feudal families Polizzi's until the XVI century and Spadafora's and Di Ballo's.

Ransomed by citizens, the village has belonged to State until 1682 when it was conquered by the Marquise Lancellotto Castelli and it has remained under him for a long time.

The Cathedral Church and the Church of S. Giacomo are the most important monuments.

Church Madonna delle Grazie

It is interesting to know that in the near quarters of Acqua Santa and Acqua Canne there are some fountains whose waters are known for their presumed miraculous effects.

Among important characters original of this place we cite the painter Antonino Mancuso Fuoco, (1921-1996), that with the artistic production reflect places, plants, animals and tipical activity of the Nebrodi area.
