The town of Capri Leone

Tourism in Capri Leone

Walking along town streets

About 120 km. from Messina, on the northern mounts Nebrodi, on the extreme left side of the broad stream of Zappulla, rises Capri Leone.

The panorama shows, besides imposing mounts, beautiful green extents with vegetable, cereal and fruit growings.

The village is probably medieval and it appears for the first time in a formal document in 1320.

The inhabited centre, made of square houses, keeps an atmosphere of the village that may be found in the country town architecture and in the way of living of population, attentive to ancient flavours of traditions.

Among monuments which enrich the small town much importance is given to churches.

The Cathedral Church, built in the Middle Ages, shows a majestic bell-tower made in the typical structure of the time and a rich sculptured portal of 1700.

The Church of Annunziata (Virgin Mary) keeps a XVIIIth-century bell-tower too and inside there are some frescoes and a fine sculpture made by Antonello Gagini (1478-1536).

The Church of San Costantino (St. Constantine), with a beautiful front and decorated insides, keeps canvases of far-fetched workmanship, well delineated sculptures and a very valuable altar-piece with a precious frame of 1600 and representing Il Battesimo dell'Imperatore (Emperor's Baptism).
