The town of Casalvecchio Siculo

Tourism in Casalvecchio Siculo

The Church SS. Pietro and Paolo (Peter and Paul)

The Church SS. Pietro and Paolo is one of the most complex monument of Sicily.

Founded by basilian friars it was rebuilt in 1117 and later in 1172 was restored by Gherardo il Franco for Teostericto's account as it is quoted in a Greek epigraph cut on the false architrave of the main door.

Very singular are the coloured effects created by alternating fillets of brick, lavic stone, calcareous stone and sandstone.

It is at same time a admirable compendium of Byzantine, Arab and Norman influences.

The outside shows a decoration with pilasters and small intertwisted arcades and saw-toothed motifs. The main door is preceded by a portico between two towers.

The inside shows three naves divided by Corinthian columns which support ogive arches. Along the nave, in the transept's area is based an octagonal tambour.
