The town of Floresta

Tourism in Floresta

Walking along the town streets

Floresta, which rises more than hundred kilometres from Messina, on the eastern mounts Nebrodi, was founded in 1600 by some refugees escaped to Spanishes.

The beautiful small town is the highest municipality of Sicily and for its particular position, on a tableland from which it looks at the enrapturing volcano of Etna, and for its luxuriant vegetation is a place of stay, above all during the winter season when it is whitened by the snow, for people who want to rest and to amuse.

The village was founded round the Church of Sant'Anna and still now it keeps, in the buildings, the same architectonic shapes of the time.

The town-planning, simple and refined, has its buildings which are moderate in their height.

The anterior part of the houses is supplied with horizontal architectonic elements, based on the door-posts richly decorated.

Very important from artistic point of view are also the portals and coat-of-arms made of ancient stone adorned with floral and animal figures which dominate the fronts of the buildings.

Characteristic are the balconies, protected by iron elements and supported by corbels elegantly sculptured.

Also the countries which are round the inhabited centre, show evidences of the past times in the casotti, functional shelters made of stone and used by shepherds.

The landscape is framed by small lakes scattered among mounts which house, in their stops, birds which migrate to Africa.

Woody vegetation prevalently includes beeches, the imposing trees with a whitish and smooth trunk and with a large foliage.

In an area near the river Flascio raises the Chapel of Tre Vergini (three Virgins), daily visited by many believers and destination of pilgrimages which take place on the first Sunday of August.
