The pinewood

The municipality has 1.708 inhabitants and an area of 996 hectares for a population density of 171 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on a hilly area and is 320 metres above sea-level.

Main economic activities are agriculture, breeding and handicraft. Products mostly cultivated are citrus fruit, olives, fruit.

Cathedral Church

The name of the little town derives from Sicilian Graniti, and means "granaries" and refers to the production of grain typical in this area. The centre was founded in the IX century by Arabs.

Later it has belonged to different feudatories: to Nicola Castagna in 1372 and to Giacomo Balsamo in 1498.

It has been under the governmental area of Taormina until 1639 and then it was acquired by the noble Mastrillo family.

Nearby the little town there is a splendid Nature Reserve of the Valley of the Alcàntara.

The best author of villotte, a typical form of Friuli poetry, seems to be just an writer coming from Graniti, Giovanni Calabrò (1892-1948) who taught for a long time in the schools in Friuli.
