The name of the very small town derives from feudatory' name whom it belonged to in the XIII century, Gualtiero Marino. The addition derives from Greek Sicaminòs, that means "mulberry" and refers to plenty of this tree once present in the area.
In 1212 the feud was given to Gualtiero Marino by Frederick II and in the XVII century it passed through succession to the Graffeos who have kept the power until the XIX century.
The most interesting monument is the Cathedral Church of St. Nicola recently restored and it keeps inside valuable paintings of the XVIII century, the Ponte Vecchio and the Church of St. Giuseppe.
It is interesting to know that several mulberry groves in the past were used to feed silkworms since silk industry was typical of the place.
