Original name of the isle was Meligunis, changed into the current one during Greek domination. "Lipari" in fact derives from Greek Lìpara, that means "the splendid".

The isle has been populated since Neolithic period and later it was occupied by Greeks, Romans and Chartaginians.

After the incursions of Vandals in the Middle Ages it declined and was left by population.

In 1342 it was conquered by king Roberto of Naples. But in 1544 because of corsairs' pillage and of deportation of its citizens it declined again.

To avoid further invasions, Spanish in the same century built a castle fortified by walls.

Inhabited centre after rebuilding many buildings which were destroyed during two World Wars, was subjected to further transformations.

Now the commune includes in its territory Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea, Vulcano and Stromboli isles.

The most interesting monuments are the Spanish Castle of the XVI century; the Cathedral rebuilt in the XV and XVI centuries in the place of the old Norman Cathedral and the Archaeological Eolian Museum.
