Original name of Longi was Castrum Longum, and in Latin means "long fort" and probably refers to the long shape of its territory. The centre was founded in the IX century by inhabitants of the ancient sicanian town Castros. They founded it after being destroyed by an Arabic invasion.
At first it has been a military outpost (like its old name makes understood) but later it gradually changed into a town centre with gathering houses round the castle. During Swabian-Norman domination the feud belonged to Lancia family who have kept the power until 1659 and then it passed to Silvestro of Naples. Later it became a possession of dukes d'Ossada who have been lords of Longi till 1965.

The most interesting monuments are the Medieval Castle of the XII century; the Cathedral Church built in the XVI century next to a fifteenth-century bell-tower; the church of SS. Annunziata which has a valuable portico made from local stone and the ruins of the castle of Milè.
There are further several archaeological finds found in the "Grotta del Lauro" (Lauro Grotto), situated nearby Longi and they date back to Copper age (III millenium B.C.)
