This atlas is to be considered by sure a fundamental contribution to the acquaintance and the understanding of the great historical and cultural patrimony of the Aeolian islands.
The attention that these islands gained world-wide, mainly due to the beauty of the landscapes and to some particular natural phenomena, asks today for being enriched from the acquaintance of the human contribution as well in daily life as in art and in social, civil working experience and in the political one.
The catalogue of the historical, artistic and pictorial assets made within of this project promoted by the European Community took place in two times.
The first one, started on 1900, had a laborious but rich of positive experiences beginning.
The second one, put into effect between 1993 and 1994, allowed to obtain three objectives. The first one regarded the fullfillment of the census. The second one concerned a more scientific approach about the techniques to be used in cataloging. The third and last objective aimed at the writing of the present " Atlas " as a completion of all the project.
The cataloging work interested the following four Aeolian municipalities: Lipari, Santa Marina Salina, Leni and Malfa. It regarded fifty-five churches and the Episcopal and Communal Palace of Lipari.
The Atlas is therefore the result of the research lead on the Aeolian territory and was made possible also thanks to the contribution of S.E. Mons. Francisco Miccichè and of the parish priests who collaborated with " religious " patience.
First one in its kind in Sicily, the present publication is an anthological repertory with a didactic and divulgative nature. It has to be seen like a job instrument or a simple consultation tool for all of the citizens.
Pearls of Mediterranean Sea
Italian text with pictures.
"The Aeolian islands derive their name from Eolo, king of the winds, that here, according to
Omero, had its reign.
Wandering islands: during the millenia, the eruptions have more times modified the dimensions as well as the aspect of these islands.
The coasts and the sea depths are wondering but also to the interior of the islands is rich of fascination: great and always active volcanos, bizzarre rocks, the wild vegetation in Salina, prehistorical villages in Lipari, Panarea and Filicudi whit their archaeological treasures that the sea has biven back and are now conserved in the Archaeological Museum of Lipari.
Islands of wind and sun that have forged the character and the identity of the inhabitants. In spite of the hardness of the history and of the changes imposed by the modern way of living, their identity survived along with their customs and traditions.
The Aeolians are kind and friendly people and they will give you a warm welcome. Travel over again, therefore, from a island to the other an ancient route in the limpid waters of this legendary sea."
The authors collected in this volume the genuine soul of this splendid location, along with beautifulst pictures and a lot of useful information such as timetables, lodges, restaurants, stores and a calendar for events covering each month of the year.
