Malvagna probably derives its name from the Mallow plan. In 1928 the centre changed its name into Lanza and was jointed to the commune of Mojo Alcantara.

It again took the previous name in 1947 when it became a self governing commune. Inhabited centre was founded by Francesco Lanza in the XVII century.

It became a principality in 1627 on order of Philip IV. It has belonged to Lanzas till up the second half of the XVIII century when it turned into Salvatore Migliaccio.
