The Cathedral Church

On the extreme slopes of mounts Peloritani stretches Merì, surrounded by a beautiful landscape made of green of olive-grooves, of citrus-orchards, of vineyards and of soft colours of the sea and of the sky which softly enclose the splendid coast.

The building of the Cathedral Church, dedicated to Santissima Annunziata, began in 1596 and finished in the half of the XVII century.
The structure of the temple has been several times changed in the years: the right side was made in 1933, the bells of the church are in two niches on the front. Now the bell-tower, built in 1848, adorn the eastern side of the front with its square tower which ends in a beautiful octagonal spire, preciously decorated with four frescoes representing St. John, St. Matthew, St. Luke and St. Marcus.

The temple, with a Latin criss plan, houses inside altars of St. Lucy, St. Blaise, St.Anthony and of the Holy Heart, all of them set in the right aisle. The left aisle shows altars of St. Rita, of Our Lady of Rosary and of Immaculate Conception.
The high-altar which is part of the original furnishings, is adorned with a beautiful picture of Annunciazione, work of 1603 made by the messinese painter Antonio Catalano (1560-1630).

Characteristic is the iron spiral staircase which gets to a small apse on which it is placed a bellws organ.
Precious is the altar of Santa Vittorina adorned with coloured marbles and hard stones.
The whole drawing of the sanctuary is enriched of a magnificent parvis made of ancient stone.
