Mojo Alcantara derives its name from Latin Modium, that means "bushel" and maybe it refers to the particular shape of the mount where it is placed on. The addition has been added to distinguish it from the other two Mojo: one in province of Salerno, the other in province of Bergamo and it derives from the homonymous river that washes the village.
First information about existence of the village date back to 1400 when it belonged to Tommaso Tortorici. In fact it was given to him by Aragonese kings. Later, in the XVII century it was possession of feudal family Lanza. In 1928 it was annexed to the commune of Malvagna and was named Lanza and it has kept this name till 1947 when it again became a self-governing municipality.
The most interesting monument is the church of S. Maria delle Grazie built in 1600 and that keeps its inside a valuable wood Crucifix.
