The original name of the village was Camastra, but it in the XIV century was changed into Motta San Michele by its owners, noble Linguidas till to become the current Motta Camastra in the XV century.
In the XIII century the village was abandoned and during the XIV century it belonged to different feudatories: Ruggero of Lauria, Linguidas, Garcia Perez and Pietro Axone.
Later it was a State possession for a short time after that it returned under Axones' government. In the course of the centuries it was property of other feudal families such as Sardos in the XV century, again Laurias in the XVI century, Romeos in the XVII century and Brancifortes in the XVIII century.
The most interesting monuments are the church of Annunziata built in the XIV century and the Cathedral Church dedicated to St. Michele Arcangelo that dates back to `500 and preserves inside it two valuable marble statues of `600.
