Motta d'Affermo is prevalently an agricultural centre. Products mostly cultivated are cereals, olives, walnuts, hazel-nuts, preackly pears.

Its original name was Sparto during Aragonese domination. It was derived from the homonymous plan Ligeum Spartum spread in the area and later changed into the current name.

The feud has been founded in the Medieval period and has been possession of different lords among them there are Albamontes, Vincenzo Bonaiuto in 1557 and Castellis in 1623 and under these it assumed the title of marquisate.

The most interesting monuments are the Cathedral Church which keeps a valuable painting by Antonio Mercurio (II half of XVIII century) and the church of St. Rocco.
