The Cathedral Church

Motta d’Affermo imposes itself from high of its surrounding fruitful groundsd. Its origins date back to Norman period when it was known with name of Casale di Sparto. The village is also cited in the census took by Frederick II (1272-1337).

The inhabited centre is dominated by the Cathedral Church, built in 1380 opposite the piazza of Santa Lucia (square of St. Lucy).

The temple, dedicated to Virgin of Angels, in the course of years has underwent substantial changes and now we can admire its Renaissance style characterized by the refinement of perspective and by imposing shapes but at the same time refined and elegant.

The inside is divided into three naves by columns made of stone decorated by local artisans.

Over the altar dominates the Virgin Mary received into Heaven, a splendid picture framed by a refined cornice and made by the artist Antonino Mercurio of Palermo in 1785.

The vault and the aisles are enriched with precious stuccoes wich recall the curvilinear movements typical of Baroque period. Of good workmanship is the small tabernacle made of sculptured wood richly rolled gold and supported by columns.

Several are the canvases which furnish the temple among which satnds out for its expression the Immaculate, work of 1650 made by Flemish school.
