The village with Medieval origins has belonged to different feudatories: Roccas, Marcheses, princes of Alcontres. After building the castle in 1656 the town centre increased its development.

Then it was under the governmental jurisdiction of Messina and from 1929 to 1948 it was village of Roccalumera and it became self-governing only after 1948.

The most interesting monuments are ruins of the Medieval Castle. It will be as soon as possible to visit an interesting "Museo del mare e delle tradizioni popolari" (Museum of sea and of folklore) now setting up.
