Patti derives from Latin Pactae that means fixed. The centre was founded in 1094 during the domination of count Ruggero d'Altavilla. Later it was burnt down by Fredrick II of Aragon to penalize its loyalty to Angevins.
The centre was rebuilt and became a State dominion. But in 1544 was burnt down again by corsair Ariadeno Barbarossa. A new town and economic increase there was during the XVII century.
The most interesting monuments are the Cathedral built in the XVIII century; the church of St. Michele of Medieval period; the Sactuary of Madonna di Tindari placed nearby Patti and renowned destination of pilgrimages. It keeps in its inside a statue of "Madonna Nera" (Black Madonna) in Byzantine style.

Besides archaeological ruins of a Romana Villa are also very interesting. They date back to the II century A.D. and are found in Marina di Patti.
It exists a funny tongue twister about Patti: "U Sinnicu di Patti, manna a Napuli ppi piatti. E chi non c'erunu piatti a Patti, ca u Sinnicu di Patti manna a Napuli ppi piatti?" that is "The Mayor of Patti sends someone to Naples for plates. But were not plates in Patti if the Mayor of Patti sends someone to Naples for plates?".
