Pettineo probably derives from a familiar surname Pettini. First information about origins of the village date back to the XII century and it belonged to Manfredi Maletti.
In the course of the centuries it was ruled by different feudatories: by Ventimiglias in the XIII and XV centuries and by Valguaneras and again by Ventimiglias who built a Castle.
The most interesting monuments are the Cathedral Church built in the XVI century; the Church of St. Sebastiano with a splendid XVIth-century portal and the Church of St. Nicola that dates back to the XIV century and it was restored in the XVII century.
At Pettineo there is a funny saying: "Iri ppi na vasata a Pittineu" which means: "To go for a kiss to Pettineo". It in figurative language means "the game is not worth the candle".
