The Convent of San Francesco (St. Francis)

Piraino, village of probable Saracen origin, has got a rich history of glory like testify its sumptuous monuments, churches, towers and Baronial palaces.

The beginning of the inhabited centre is characterized by the Convent of San Francesco of Minorities Observant Friars surely one of the symbols of the village.

The building, built between 1604 and 1614, keeps some cells, part of preimetrical walls and the very beautiful and surprising close curtyard delimited by porticoes with columns, in sandy rock elegantly sculptured, adorned with capitals.

The tunnel gets valuable frescoes partly hidden since the cloister has been invaded by the cemeterys building.

The church annexed to the Convent dates to 1600 and in the course of the centuries has undergone different changes. The inside decorated with stuccoes of valuable workmanship representing loaves, flowers and small children, keeps a splendid altar made of marble with precious shades of different colours. The altar is surmounted by a tabernacle supported by four columns with original artistical shapes.

Complete furniture of the temple some delicate and important canvases of 1700 besides a delightful statue made of valuable marble representing Our Lady of Snow, made by the school of the sculptor Antonello Gagini (1478-1536) of Palermo.
