The original name of the village was Santissimo Salvatore , altered in 1863 into San Salvatore di Fitàlia from near stream Fitàlia which in Greek means "plantations".
It rose as a Saracen village and has been always jointed to churches of Patti and Messina. Great impulse to its development was given by Roger I who made built the Monastery of San Salvatore.
The most interesting monument is the Basilical Cathedral Church of SS. Salvatore which is Norman. But recent repairs have been brought to light ruins of the temple built during Rinascimento with Gothic-sicilian echoes. Of the XV century is the Bishop's Palace while of the XIX is the Catalan Palace.
Among important people we mention the "Father of the native-country", Ruggero Settimo a component of princely Sèttimo of Fitàlia family. Upon him was conferred an honour of "Collare dell'Annunziata" of Reign of Italy and it was proposed to him the presidency of Senate but he refused because of ill-health.
