The Tower of Saracens

Santa Teresa di Riva is a small village laid down along the coast and included beteween the turrents of Agrò and of Savoca.
The inhabited centre is characterized by quarters of Portosalvo, Barracca and Bucalo.
Just in Bucalo, next to the Church of Our Lady of Carmelo, raises the Tower of Saracens.

The present building is of Norman origin, but it is probable that it was already existent in 1000. The Tower was built with so many others scattered along the Ionian coast to defend the territory from attacks made by Saracen pirates.

The original structure was cylindrical and higher that the present which is made up of three floors each containing an only round room. In 1580 the building was annexed to the inside of the palace of Bucalo family.

The Tower of Saracens

About 1895 the then owner of the tower altered the structure eliminating the dome, restoring openings and supplying the whole complex with masonry elements placed at egual intervals at completion of the walls.

Behind the Bucalos residence there is a tunnel, now partly destroyed and impassable, which connected the Tower of Saracens to the Tower of Bagghi.
